Pair of solo shots is not enough, as Brooklyn drops road opener to Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 11, 2023) — LF Jaylen Palmer and DH Omar De Los Santos each pummeled their first home runs of the season, but the Winston-Salem Dash outmaneuvered the Brooklyn Cyclones, 5-3, in the opening game of the series on Tuesday night at Truist Stadium.

Scoreless through an inning and a half, Winston-Salem (1-1) broke through in the bottom of the second. 2B Loidel Chappelli smacked a base-hit up the middle and advanced to second on a ground out. After taking third on a passed ball, the Cuban native scampered home on a throwing error to give the Dash a 1-0 edge.

In the fourth, Chappelli created havoc again. Following a one-out double to right-center from RF Wilfred Veras, Chappelli stepped in and walloped the second offering he saw into the right-field seats for a two-run home run. The left-handed swinger's first of the campaign pushed Winston-Salem ahead by three.

Brooklyn (2-2) started drew within a run in the top of the fifth. LF Jaylen Palmer ignited the frame with a towering fly ball to left. The left fielder could neither see the ball nor make a play on it, as it sailed beyond the fence for a solo home run. SS César Berbesi followed with a walk and eventually crossed the dish on a ringing double to left-center from 3B Chase Estep.

With the score now 3-2, Winston-Salem quickly worked to regain a three-run cushion. 1B Shawn Goosenberg singled and stole second before SS Jason Matthews worked a walk. Following a sacrifice bunt and a pitching change, LF D.J. Gladney fell behind in the count 0-2 prior to slashing a two-run double down the right-field line to put the Dash in front, 5-2.

De Los Santos drew the 'Clones within a pair in the top of the seventh. With the bases empty and two out, the 23-year-old unfurled a mammoth shot that clanged off the scoreboard in right-center field for a solo home run. De Los Santos' first High-A home run trimmed Brooklyn's deficit to two, 5-3.

Opportunities presented themselves for the Cyclones in the eighth and ninth, but they could not complete the comeback. Brooklyn coaxed a walk and a single to start the eighth, but a pair of fly outs and a ground ball to third quelled the rally. De Los Santos reached on a two-out infield knock in the ninth, but RHP Tristan Stivors induced a fly ball to center to end the contest and secure his first career save.

RHP Blade Tidwell (0-1) suffered the defeat in his Brooklyn debut, permitting five runs (four earned) and striking out six over 4.1 innings. Despite the loss, the New York Mets' 2022 second-round pick produced 14 swings-and-misses on Tuesday night.

Dash RHP Jonathan Cannon (1-0) yielded a duo of runs in the fifth, but Chicago's 2022 third-round selection tallied five innings on the bump to earn his first professional win.

The Cyclones will attempt to return to the win column in game two of their series against the Dash on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. RHP Jeffrey Colón (NR) will take the mound for the Brooklyn in his season debut. RHP Norge Vera (NR) — the White Sox' No. 8 prospect per Baseball America — is scheduled to take the ball for Winston-Salem.
