Columbia, SC – Fireflies starter Hunter Patteson was brilliant, but it wasn’t enough to earn a win, as the bullpen allowed three runs in the final two innings of a 3-1 loss to Charleston at Segra Park Tuesday evening.
Starting pitching was the name of the game tonight, as both starters logged quality outings on the hill. Hunter Patteson became the first Fireflies pitcher in 2024 to log seven frames and he trekked seven innings while allowing only one hit. He punched out seven batters as he threw 70 pitches and 57 strikes. It ended up leading to a no-decision though. The Fireflies (16-15) are now 0-4 when their starting pitcher works a quality start this year.
The RiverDogs (14-18) also received a quality start and a no-decision was awarded to Gary Gill Hill. Gill Hill allowed a single run in six frames with eight punchouts.
Charleston’s rally started in the eighth inning. Blake Robertson singled and Carlos Colmenarez walked off reliever Doug Kirkland (L, 0-2) to set the table for Chris Barate, who smoked a triple to the right-center gap to turn a 1-0 deficit to a 2-1 lead for Charleston.
The next inning, a lead-off walk to Adrian Santana turned into run number three off the pen. Santana scored off a Connor Fenlong wild pitch to give the RiverDogs some insurance.
Derlin Figueroa powered the Fireflies to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as he smashed his fourth homer of the season to the right field lawn.
Chris Villaman (W, 1-0) worked two scoreless innings to earn his first win of the year before he handed the ball to Engert Garcia (S, 1) who finished the game for Charleston.
The Fireflies continue their series with the Charleston RiverDogs tomorrow afternoon at 12:05 pm. RHP Blake Wolters (0-0, 3.78 ERA) gets the nod for Columbia and Charleston counters with RHP Santiago Suarez (1-3, 5.09 ERA).
Tomorrow is a Business Special day at Segra Park! Come on out and play hookie from work like Ferris Bueller on his day off. First pitch is set for 12:05 pm. Buy your tickets at ColumbiaFireflies.com.
