Columbia, SC – The Fireflies bats exploded, scoring five runs in the fifth inning, propelling the club to a 9-5 win over the Charleston RiverDogs Wednesday afternoon at Segra Park.
Brennon McNair started Columbia’s five-run fifth with a solo blast to left field, giving Columbia a 4-3 lead. The bats kept rolling after that as Erick Torres, Blake Mitchell and Derlin Figueroa added three-consecutive singles. Figueroa’s single plated Torres. After a Chris Brito sacrifice bunt, Austin Charles delivered a three-run long ball to left, putting an exclamation mark on the inning and pushing Columbia’s lead to 8-3.
Columbia (18-16) scored their final run the next inning. Erick Torres led-off the inning and came around to score on an Adam Boucher wild pitch.
Blake Mitchell got the Fireflies on the board with his fourth round-tripper of the season in the bottom of the third. After a Lizandro Rodriguez double to start the frame, Columbia’s DH wrapped a 3-2 pitch around the right field foul pole to put Columbia in front 2-1.
Columbia tied their season-most 15 hits during the day game and scored nine runs for the first time since May 3 at Carolina.
Ethan Bosacker (W, 3-1) was solid in relief going five, two-run frames after coming in for Blake Wolters in a 3.1 inning start. Jarold Rosado closed the game out for Columbia, allowing a single run in the ninth inning.
Charleston (14-19) got the run back in the top of the fourth. Woo Shin doubled to start the inning and came around on a Ricardo Gonzalez two bagger off Ethan Bosacker. Next, Bryan Broecker and Odalys Peguero hit back-to-back singles to score Broecker to retake the lead 3-2.
The Charleston RiverDogs hopped on the board first Wednesday afternoon. Odalys Peguero drew a two out walk, swiped his 11th bag of the season to get into scoring position and then rounded home off a base knock from Ricardo Gonzalez to break the scoreless tie.
The Fireflies continue their set with Charleston with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 5:30 pm. Both teams have yet to name both sets of starting pitchers.
