COLUMBIA, SC – The Columbia Fireflies, in conjunction with the Carolina League and Minor League Baseball, have announced today that Luinder Avila has been named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 27-July 3.
During the week, Avila started one game against the Augusta GreenJackets where he worked six innings, allowing two, unearned runs off one hit and one walk. He also fanned a season-high nine batters in the contest. The righty has penned both of Columbia’s two quality starts this season, and both came in the month of June.
Avila is the second Fireflies pitcher to win Pitcher of the Week honors this season, joining Noah Cameron, who was given the award May 8. He also joins River Town, who was named the Carolina League Player of the Week April 18.
Avila is 4-6 this season in 15 starts to pair with a 4.98 ERA. He has struck out 57 hitters in 65 innings of work. The 65 innings are a career-high for the 20-year-old, who played his first professional season in 2018.
Following the off day, the Fireflies pick their series back up with the Pelicans for a Trash the Poop Dog Days of Summer at Segra Park. Fans can bring their dog for free to the park! If that weren’t enough, it’s a Whiteclaw Wednesday, where all 16 oz Whiteclaw Seltzers are just $5. Tickets are available at FirefliesTickets.com.
