Stuart, Cyclones Stifle Blue Rocks for Third-Straight Win

WILMINGTON, Del. (July 5, 2023) — After allowing two runs on three hits through the first five hitters of the game, RHP Tyler Stuart sat down 17 of the last 19 batters he faced, as the Brooklyn Cyclones throttled the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 9-3, on Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium.

Wilmington (4-7, 33-42) struck first in the home first against Stuart (4-0). 2B Darren Baker singled and scored on a knock by CF Jeremy De La Rosa, while 3B Brady House reached on a fielder’s choice and crossed on a single to right by RF Jared McKenzie.

Down 2-0 after one, Brooklyn (8-3, 36-40) quickly tied the score in the top of the second. DH Drake Osborn started a rally with a single to right and, two batters later, SS Junior Tilien hammered a ball to deep left. The 20-year-old’s blast banged off the back wall of the Cyclones’ left-field bullpen for a two-run home run. Tilien’s second long ball for Brooklyn tied it at two.

In the third, the ‘Clones grabbed the lead for good. CF Alex Ramírez roped a double to start the inning and moved to third on a base hit to right by C Kevin Parada. 3B William Lugo followed with a knock of his on to score Ramírez, putting Brooklyn ahead, 3-2.

Following a double play, Osborn slapped an RBI knock to center, granting the ‘Clones a 4-2 advantage.

Brooklyn added one more in the inning thanks to heads-up baserunning. RF Omar De Los Santos singled Osborn to third and then stole second base. Tilien then tapped a grounder to third, but Wilmington got De Los Santos in a run down between second and third instead of throwing to first. The 23-year-old was eventually tagged out, but not before Osborn scored to make it a 5-2 cushion for the Cyclones.

An inning later, Brooklyn was at it again. 2B D’Andre Smith cracked a one-out triple to left-center field before crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Ramírez.

In front 6-2, the Cyclones added another thanks to Smith in the sixth. The former USC Trojan started the frame with a ground-rule double to left-center field, advanced to third on a flyout, and scored on a wild pitch.

Brooklyn added two more runs of insurance in the ninth. Ramírez walked and Parada singled before each advanced to second and third on a wild toss. LF Stanley Consuegra chased both runners home on a looping two-run single to right.

Wilmington was able to scratch across one last tally after Stuart departed in the seventh. The Blue Rocks loaded the bags on singles by LF Leandro Emiliani and 2B Darren Baker, as well as a walk to SS Viandel Peña. A wild pitch enabled Emiliani to score the Rocks’ final run.

After the bumpy beginning, Stuart dominated for the Cyclones. The Kankakee, Ill. native permitted two runs on four hits, striking out five, over six innings to earn his fourth win of 2023.

RHP Bryan Cáceres (0-1) was taxed for six runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. The 23-year-old was saddled with his first High-A defeat.

Brooklyn will try and match their longest winning streak of the season at four on Thursday night. RHP Blade Tidwell (5-3, 3.53) – the Mets’ No. 7 prospect per Baseball America — is expected to toe the slab for the Cyclones. The Blue Rocks are projected to counter with LHP Andrew Alvarez (4-2, 2.79). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
