Dylan Beavers Walks It Off For ‘Birds in 8-7 Win Over Hillcats

SALISBURY, MD. – The Delmarva Shorebirds rallied from multiple deficits as they emerged victorious 8-7 over the Lynchburg Hillcats in 11 innings on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

With numerous players making their home debuts for the Shorebirds (41-73, 20-29), the ‘Birds extended their personal winning streak over the Hillcats (56-59, 21-28) to five wins in a row.

The ‘Birds opened the scoring in the second. Max Wagner tripled to start the frame and after a walk, Silas Ardoin drove him in with a single.

Jake Fox tied the game for Lynchburg with a solo homer leading off the fourth, his fifth of the season.

Lynchburg plated another in the fifth on a Jorge Burgos sacrifice fly before Will Bartlett clubbed a two-run homer in the sixth, his third long ball of the season.

The Shorebirds mounted a furious rally in the seventh to regain the lead. Frederick Bencosme tripled to start the frame before Adam Retzbach walked. A wild pitch allowed Bencosme to score and Elio Prado then walked to put runners at first and second. Carter Young doubled, but Retzbach was thrown out at the plate with Prado going to third. Jud Fabian followed with another double, scoring Prado. A walk to Dylan Beavers loaded the bases before a balk forced home the tying run. Wagner then walked to load the bases again. Reed Trimble legged out a fielder’s choice, scoring Fabian, and putting Delmarva ahead 5-4.

Down to their last out and last strike, Lynchburg tied the game in the ninth on a Burgos solo homer, his fifth of the season.

Playing into extras, both teams went down scoreless in the tenth. It wasn’t until the 11th when Lynchburg finally pulled back ahead. Yordys Valdez produced a run with a sacrifice fly before Fox collected his second RBI of the day with a double.

One more frenetic rally proved to be the winner for the Shorebirds in the bottom of the 11th. The Shorebirds loaded the bases to start the inning before a wild pitch scored Ardoin to make it a one-run game. Prado then walked to reload the bases, where Carter Young hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Bencosme, and putting the winning run at third. After a strikeout, Beavers came through with a clutch two out single, scoring the winning run from third, and winning the game 8-7 for Delmarva.

Trey Nordmann (1-0) earned the win in his Delmarva debut, going two-thirds of an inning without allowing a baserunner.

Miguel Vinicio (1-2) suffered the loss for Lynchburg, allowing three runs (two earned) on a hit and three walks, striking out three.

The Shorebirds continue their six-game against the Hillcats at Perdue Stadium on Wednesday, August 24. Keagan Gillies (1-0, 0.00) is slated to go for Delmarva against Trenton Denholm (4-4, 4.32) for the Hillcats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
