COLUMBIA, SC – The Fireflies were in front in a one-run pitcher’s duel before the Pelicans roared out for four runs in the bottom of the seventh as Columbia fell 5-2 Tuesday evening at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Pelicans big moment came in the bottom of the seventh. After Myrtle Beach scored the tying run, Chase Isbell left the game with runners on first and second. Jacob Widener entered the game and surrendered a three-run blast to Brian Kalmer. It was the designated hitter’s eighth round-tripper of the season and moved the game from a 2-2 tie to ta 5-2 lead. Leonel Espinoza scored on a Rafael Morel double to left to tie the game and start the scoring for the Pelicans in the seventh.

The Fireflies broke through before Myrtle Beach could step to the dish for the first time Tuesday. Daniel Vazquez led things off with a single and then stole his 30th base of the season to set the table for Trevor Werner. Columbia’s third baseman laced a two-bagger down the third base line that scored Vazquez from second to give Columbia a 1-0 lead.

Jared Dickey doubled to set the table for Daniel Vazquez and the top of the order in the top of the seventh. Vazquez deposited a single to right-center field on a flair that second baseman Cristian Hernandez couldn’t quite get to, scoring Dickey and giving the Fireflies a 2-1 lead in the process.

Logan Martin pitched very well Tuesday evening. In his second start with the Fireflies, Martin spun three innings, allowing just one hit and punching out three hitters. Martin left the game with a 1-0 lead.

After Samuel Valerio entered the game in the fourth, Jefferson Rojas was able to tally across a single, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error from Columbia’s catcher Hayden Dunhurst and came around on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1. The run would stand as unearned. Valerio closed out that inning and the next inning without allowing another run and handed the ball to Chase Isbell to come out for the sixth inning.

The Fireflies continue their series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at Pelicans Ballpark. RHP Henry Williams (2-0, 2.37 ERA) toes the rubber for the Fireflies and the Pelicans counter with LHP Jackson Ferris (1-3, 3.71 ERA).
