PENSACOLA, FL – In the top of the ninth, the Biloxi Shuckers (10-8) brought home three and brought the tying run to the plate, but a 97 MPH line drive from Carlos Rodriguez was smashed right to third, ending the comeback attempt in a 6-5 loss to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (9-9) at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Thursday night. The game was Biloxi’s seventh of the season decided by one run.

Pensacola struck early for the second straight day, using three straight doubles from Tanner Allen, Paul McIntosh and Joe Mack to take a 2-0 lead three batters in. They extended the lead to 3-0 three batters later when an error allowed Mack to score from third.

The Shuckers snuck back into the game in the fourth with a triple from Mike Boeve and an RBI single from Darrien Miller. The triple, Boeve’s second of the day, saw him join Tyler Black as the only two players in Shuckers franchise history with multiple triples in a game. Black became the first to do so on June 29, 2023, at Shuckers Ballpark against the Mississippi Braves. In the fifth, Biloxi made it a 3-2 game with a solo home run from Zavier Warren to left-center, his first of the season.

The Blue Wahoos responded with a solo home run from Jacob Berry in the sixth and extended the lead to 6-2 with a two-run shot from Joe Mack in the seventh.

In the ninth, the Shuckers started on the comeback trail with a walk from Darrien Miller and a single from Freddy Zamora, putting two on with no outs. Zavier Warren then struck with a double to left to cut the deficit to three. Ernesto Martinez Jr. and Lamar Sparks both tallied RBI groundouts, making it a 6-5 game with two outs. Carlos Rodriguez then smashed a line drive to third that was caught by Jacob Berry, giving Pensacola a 6-5 win.

On the mound, Tyler Woessner tied his career-high with eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings for Biloxi. Shane Smith also struck out five in relief, two shy of his career high.

Woessner (0-1) took the loss while Valente Bellozo (1-1) earned the win for Pensacola after seven strikeouts over five innings. Lincoln Henzman also earned his first save of the season.

The Shuckers will continue the series on Friday at 6:05 p.m. against the Blue Wahoos at Blue Wahoos Stadium. TJ Shook (1-1, 2.63) is set to start for Biloxi after five shutout innings last Saturday against Chattanooga. Evan Fitterer (0-1, 6.14) is slated to start for Pensacola.
