BILOXI, MS – Despite a scoreless streak from the pitching staff that reached 22 consecutive innings, the Biloxi Shuckers (2-1) fell to the Montgomery Biscuits (1-2), 3-1, in 12 innings at Shuckers Ballpark on Sunday afternoon, with all four runs coming in the final inning. Despite the loss, the Shuckers took the opening series for the second consecutive year.
Starter Tyler Woessner, in his Double-A debut, dazzled for the Shuckers retiring each of the first eight batters he faced, including four strikeouts. He used a 1-4-5 double-play in the fourth to work around two hits and finished six scoreless innings on 77 pitches before being lifted.
For the Biscuits, starter Brendan McKay tossed three scoreless innings in his first appearance in 591 days before being lifted in the fourth.
Both teams traded zeros throughout the first 11 innings. The Shuckers used Sam Gardner, Kaleb Bowman and two innings from James Meeker out of the bullpen to keep Montgomery scoreless through 10 while the Biscuits used seven different relievers to hold Biloxi scoreless.
In the 10th and 11th, the Shuckers brought the tying run to third, but a strikeout and a flyout to deep left-center from Ethan Murray kept the game scoreless into the 12th. In the 12th, Nick Schenll broke the Shuckers’ 22-inning scoreless streak with an RBI double to the wall in right, giving Montgomery a 1-0 lead. Bob Seymour extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-RBI single three batters later.
The Shuckers broke their own scoreless drought with an RBI single from Zavier Warren in the 12th with a two-out RBI single to left-center, but Alfredo Zarraga earned his first save of the year by stranding the tying run at first with a groundout to third. Antonio Jimenez (1-0) earned the win while Nick Merkel (0-1) took the loss.
