WEST SACRAMENTO, CA - The Dorados de Sacramento (22-24) fell to the Las Vegas 51s (19-27) by a score of 10-7 Tuesday night despite back-to-back homers from Hunter Pence and Ryder Jones.
Left-handed pitcher Matt Gage had a rough outing, surrendering nine earned runs in five innings pitched. The 51s scored two runs in the second inning and another three runs in the third to take an early 5-0 lead.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the third inning, Pence crushed a no-doubter to left field for his first home run since joining the River Cats on a rehab assignment on April 27. Two pitches later, Ryder Jones followed with a home run down the right field line to tie the game 5-5. Las Vegas pulled away, however, scoring five more runs to take the first two games of this series.
The River Cats square off with the Las Vegas 51s again on Wednesday night at Raley Field, featuring River Cats ace Dereck Rodríguez (4-0, 3.25) against 51s righty Corey Oswalt (2-3, 7.48). · Pence's 343-foot homer was his first home run in 72 plate appearances with the River Cats and the first grand slam for Sacramento since Jae-gyun Hwang on August 19, 2017.
· Austin Slater went 2-for-3 with his 17th double of the season which also extended his incredible hitting streak to 17 games. Slater is now second in the Pacific Coast League with a .396 batting average.
· Right-hander Dylan Rheault made his Triple-A debut on Tuesday night, tossing two shutout innings while allowing a walk and striking out one. The six foot, nine inch Rheault signed with the San Francisco Giants as a minor league free agent in 2017.
