SOMERSET, NJ -- The Bowie Baysox (47-32) earned their 10th shutout win of the season and their first-ever win against the Somerset Patriots (50-30) with a 4-0 victory on Thursday night at TD Bank Ballpark.
Grayson Rodriguez was very strong in his start, recording six strikeouts in the first two innings of the game. He finished with nine over 4.2 innings, and did not allow a run while surrendering just one hit and one walk.
Bowie’s first run came in the second, when Seth Mejias-Brean scored on a Zach Watson RBI single. Two innings later, Mejias-Brean hit a solo home run, his first with Bowie, to double the Bowie lead.
It wasn’t until the eighth when the Baysox scored again. Adley Rutschman came to the plate as a right-handed batter and launched his 18th home run of the year to left field. Bowie added one more run in the ninth. Zach Watson finished with two RBI on the evening.
Diogenes Almengo relieved Tim Naughton in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and nobody out. Almengo, with the infield in, got two groundouts including a double play to escape the inning without allowing a run.
Felix Bautista entered for the ninth, and after allowing a leadoff walk, struck out the next three in order to shut the door and seal the Bowie win.
In game four of the series on Friday night, left-hander Drew Rom (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will make his second start at the Double-A level for the Baysox. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
