BIRMINGHAM, AL – Despite 10 hits, the Biloxi Shuckers (70-59, 36-24) fell to the Birmingham Barons (47-83, 22-39), 8-4, at Regions Field on Friday night. The loss snapped Biloxi’s 10-game win streak that tied the franchise record that was set and tied during the 2019 season.

Birmingham started the scoring in the second with a solo home run from Luis Mieses to center to take a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Biloxi tied it up with an RBI double from Ethan Murray to right-center, scoring Freddy Zamora from first. An inning later, the Shuckers took the lead with a solo shot from Wes Clarke, his Southern League-leading 24th of the year.

On the mound, Shuckers’ starter Christian Mejias worked around Mieses’ solo shot and a double in the fourth to face three over the minimum through five. He worked into the sixth, the second time in his last three starts that he’s worked into the fifth. After two walks, a hit batter and a double play, the Shuckers went to the bullpen with a 2-1 lead.

The next batter, Tim Elko, lined a single up the middle, tying the game at two. Mieses then singled to left, giving the Barons a 3-2 lead. After a walk loaded the bases, Yoelqui Cespedes launched a grand slam over the scoreboard in left, extending the Barons’ lead to 7-2. They tallied their eighth run of the night in the seventh with an RBI single from Bryan Ramos.

The Shuckers fought back in the top of the eighth with three straight hits to load the bases. Then, Ethan Murray cut into the deficit with an RBI fielder’s choice and an RBI single from Jackson Chourio made it 8-4. Barons’ reliever Haylen Green, however, used a popout to second to end the threat. In the ninth, Ernesto Martinez started the inning with a single, but a double play and a groundout ended the night. Garrett Schoenle (4-7) earned the win for the Barons after 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. Mejias (6-11) took the loss for Biloxi.

The loss, combined with a Montgomery Biscuits win, drops Biloxi to a game and a half behind the Biscuits for the final playoff spot in the South Division with eight games to go. The two will meet at MGM Park starting on Tuesday, September 12. As it stands, the Shuckers would need to win four of six against the Biscuits to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

Righty Tobias Myers is set to start for Biloxi on Saturday against righty Jonathan Cannon for the Barons. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Regions Field.

The game can be heard on Cruisin’ WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM with coverage beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the Biloxi Shuckers Pregame Show featuring the Mississippi Army National Guard Pregame Interview. The game can also be seen live on MiLB.tv.
