Abreu Drives In Three, Sod Poodles Beat Frisco 7-4

Amarillo, Texas — Amarillo picked up their first win of the series, beating the RoughRiders 7-4 on Friday night in front of a sold out crowd of 6,407 at HODGETOWN. Jancarlos Cintron got the Soddies started with a solo home run in the third inning, scoring six-unanswered runs to help hold off a late push from the RoughRiders.

Sod Poodles starter right-hander Matt Tabor came into the game without having allowed an earned run over his last 25.2 innings. Facing a daunting Frisco RoughRiders lineup, that streak came to an end in the top of the first. A leadoff single and pair of stolen bases scored on an RBI single from Josh Jung as the RoughRiders took a 1-0 lead. A leadoff double and consecutive singles pushed their lead to two runs after the top of the second.

Right-hander Cole Winn got to start on the bump for Frisco. The Rangers' No. 3 rated prospect allowed two hits through his first two innings of work but kept Amarillo off the board with four strikeouts.

A walk and single in the top of the third with one out were unable to do any harm for the RoughRiders as Tabor got out of the inning on a double play turned by the middle infielders.

Jancarlos Cintron hit a solo home off Winn in the bottom of the third inning as the Sod Poodles cut into the deficit. They got back to work in the bottom of the fourth inning. Buddy Kennedy extended his hitting streak with a leadoff single. Luis Basabe hit a double down the right field line, allowing Kennedy to score and knot the game at two runs a piece. A walk brought an end to Winn's night as Frisco made the call to their bullpen and brought in left-hander Sal Mendez. He did not allow either of his inherited runners to score after two flyouts and a bunt pop out in foul territory.

The first two batters in the Frisco half of the fifth made their way on base before Tabor dug in to retire the next three in order. Both teams went down in order of their next at bats.

Kennedy's second single of the night started the Soddies half of the sixth. Dominic Miroglio doubled with one out and gave Amarillo runners on second and third. Kennedy broke for home on a sharply hit ground ball to third but was thrown out on a bang-bang play. Mikey Reynolds stole second, once again giving the Sod Poodles a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs. Osvaldo Abreu doubled to left field and gave Amarillo their first lead in the series since Alek Thomas' leadoff home run in the first inning of game one.

The Sod Poodles added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh. Stone Garrett hit a double with one out as Ryder Jones followed him aboard with a single that gave the Soddies runners on the corners once again. Frisco made another call to their bullpen and brought in right-hander Cole Uvila. He balked in run before throwing his first pitch and then allowed a single that plated another run as the Soddies pushed the lead to 6-2.

Reynolds manufactured a run in the bottom of the eighth after seeing the RoughRiders add two on a double and two-base error that brought in two runs. After hitting a ball into left field, Reynolds hustled his way to second base and put him in scoring position. A chopper in front of the plate that was picked up by the catcher gave Reynolds the necessary room to sprint home without anyone covering the plate as Amarillo made it 7-4.

Blake Rogers came on to pitch in the eighth and struck out four of the eight batters faced to help preserve the win.

Amarillo will go for their second straight win tomorrow night as the team hosts Christmas In July. HODGETOWN will be decorated for the holidays and some lucky fan who is present will be the winner of a brand new 2021 Toyota Camry thanks to Country Auto Group. D-backs' No. 18 rated prospect Ryne Nelson (0-1, 4.34 ERA) gets the start on the mound for Amarillo.

On The Bump: It was a duel between a couple of top rated prospects in these two organizations Friday night. Diamondbacks No. 21 rated prospect Matt Tabor entered the game without allowing an earned run over his last 25.2 innings pitched. On the other side it was Rangers No. 3 rated and top rated pitching prospect, Cole Winn. Tabor's earned run streak included the first ever no-hitter of any kind in Amarillo history on July 11th. Cole Winn entered the game without allowing more than four hits in a single game this season for the RoughRiders. Tabor's streak ended in the top of the first while Winn allowed five hits including Jancarlos Cintron's solo home run in the third inning and the double from Basabe in the fourth that tied the game.

Oh, Buddy!: Infielder Buddy Kennedy extended his current hit streak to six games after his 3-for-4 night. He tied his season-high with Amarillo with those three hits. He also picked up a three-hit night in the series finale in Midland on July 18th. Over this stretch, he is 10-for-24 with a double, triple, home run, and six RBI.

11's Back At It: Stone Garrett picked up another two hits for Amarillo tonight, making it now 20 for the season. He leads the team with his 64 hits. In the month of July, Garrett has racked up eight multi-hit outings including back-to-back games in this series.

Sold Em All: Friday night's game was played in front of a sold out crowd of 6,407 fans inside HODGETOWN. It marked the 5th sellout this year for the Sod Poodles and fourth in their last seven games played at home. Amarillo currently has the second best average attendance in all of Double-A, averaging just over 5,600 fans per home game.

GONEcarlos Cintron:Jancarlos Cintron got the Soddies started with his third inning solo blast off Cole Winn for the first run of the game. For Cintron, it is his second home run of the series. His home run in Wednesday's game was the first since he hit one here at HODGETOWN on June 13th, breaking a streak of 93 at bats between games with a home run. Now, he has two in his with five at bats in between.

1 Through 9: For the fourth time this season, everyone in the starting lineup picked up at least one hit. It is the first time since the team did that on June 19th vs. Midland also here at HODGETOWN. Three of the four times it has happened have been here at home for the Sod Poodles with the lone time on the road happening in Frisco on June 5th.
