Reno, Nev. – After winning five of six games in Salt Lake City, the Reno Aces (15-11) returned home and continued their hot streak by matching that output over the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (8-18), Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, at Greater Nevada Field last week.
Reno scored 60 runs through the first five games of the series, highlighted by a historic 24-run barrage Thursday night. Jake Hager went 5-for-5, hit a three-run homer, and drove in eight. The last time an Aces player tallied eight RBIs in a game was Cole Gillespie in June of 2012.
Every game brought a different hero. With Reno trailing by a run in the seventh inning Friday night, Jorge Barrosa blasted a solo shot to the berm in right to tie the game. Diego Castillo doubled in two runs an inning later, aiding the Aces to a hearty 6-3 win.
Dominic Miroglio and Dominic Canzone steered the Aces back from a 4-run deficit Saturday, combining 5-for-7 with seven runs driven in. Canzone hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the series, clinching victory.
Bryce Jarvis led the rotation with two strong starts Tuesday and Sunday, his first two for Reno. Jarvis allowed two earned runs in 10 innings with 10 strikeouts. In Sunday’s finale, Canzone hit two more homers while Seth Beer and Jake McCarthy each went 3-for-3 with a long ball.
The Aces’ bullpen is progressing into a strength with two durable weeks in a row. Newcomer Raffi Vizcaíno flashed plus ability, winning a game in the back-to-back series. Tyler Gilbert struck out six in 3 ⅔ scoreless innings in an impressive long relief outing Thursday, while Justin Martínez struck out two in a clean ninth inning save Saturday.
Reno continues to move toward the top of the PCL standings with a real challenge ahead. The Round Rock Express (18-8) come to town for a six-game series at Greater Nevada Field. The first pitch is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. PT.
