Clinton, IA (June 26, 2018) - Johnny Adams homered and Clinton LumberKings pitching combined to strikeout 15 in a 5-4 win over the Burlington Bees on Tuesday night at Ashford University Field. The LumberKings (4-2, 43-33) led from after the first inning and then held on against the Bees (1-5, 31-44) to snap a two-game skid.
The Bees scored the game's first run in the top of the first off LumberKings starter Randy Bell. Franklin Torres singled with two out in the inning and scored three pitches later when Kevin Williams Jr. doubled to left to extend his Midwest League leading hitting streak to 19-games.
In the bottom of the first, the LumberKings answered with three runs. The rally began with one out. Ariel Sandoval singled off Bees starter Jose Soriano and was followed by a Ryan Costello walk, and Onil Pena hit by a pitch. The rain then came starting a delay that would last 32 minutes and force Soriano (0-2) from the game.
When action resumed, Keegan McGovern drove a sacrifice fly to center and two batters later Dimas Ojeda capped the rally with a two-run single to center. The inning was enough to hand Soriano the loss, his second of the season, both against the LumberKings.
Clinton added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Adams led the inning off with an opposite field home run to right, his fifth big fly of the year, and Ojeda scored the second run of the inning on a fielding error by Bees third basemen Zane Gurwitz.
Leading 5-1, the LumberKings turned to Steven Moyers to work two innings of relief. In his final inning of work, the sixth, the Bees rallied for three runs to pull to within one. A two-out two-run double by Gurwitz opened the scoring and Harrison Wenson followed on the very next pitch with an RBI double to left to make it 5-4.
Moyers earned his second win of the season for Clinton. He allowed three runs on four hits while walking none and striking out three.
Scott Boches worked a perfect inning of relief in the top of the seventh to earn his third hold of the season and Collin Kober picked up his fourth save of the year with two innings of work in which he struck out four of the eight batters he faced.
The LumberKings will meet the Burlington Bees for finale of their three-game series on Wednesday night at Ashford University Field. Clinton will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Clay Chandler (3-1, 3.48) while the Bees will tap righty Mitchell Traver (5-5, 3.52). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
