Kannapolis, NC - Tomas Alastre earned his first win in a quality start, shutting out the Kannapolis Intimidators over six innings of work on Monday afternoon in a 2-0 win at Intimidators Stadium. The Suns are 10-21 overall and have an off day on Tuesday. The team will return to action on Wednesday to begin a seven-game home stand, starting with 7:05 PM first pitch in the first game of a three-game series against the West Virginia Power at Historic Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown.
Alastre hurled six shutout innings on Monday afternoon as the Suns looked to prevent a four-game sweep by Kannapolis. The 19-year-old scattered six hits by the Intimidators and got a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, ending the frame with back-to-back strikeouts. The righty's outing on Monday was the first time he held an opponent scoreless since August 29, 2017 with the GCL Nationals.
For the second straight day Hagerstown got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the fifth inning with Kade McClure on the mound for Kannapolis. Nick Banks reached on a fielding error and stole second with one out. Jeyner Baez walked and executed a double steal with Banks, moving the runners to second and third. Kameron Esthay reached on a fielder's choice that moved Baez to third and allowed Banks to score, giving the Suns a 1-0 lead. Jack Sundberg bunted and was thrown out by McClure at first base, but Baez scored and while Esthay moved to third. With a 2-0 lead and threatening for more, Cole Freeman grounded out to end the inning. The two runs were the only scoring either team could put together, with the Suns shutting out Kannapolis for a 2-0 win.
Alastre (1-1) threw 6.0 shutout innings in his first win of the season, holding Kannapolis to six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in his second quality start of the year. Jeremy McKinney continued the shutout effort with an inning of work, allowing two hits and a strikeout to earn a hold. A.J. Bogucki earned his first save of the season, entering the game out of the bullpen in the eighth to work two innings without allowing a baserunner while striking out three.
