Midland, Texas (July 26, 2023) – Amarillo tied the six-game series against their Oil Pan Cup Rivals with a 9-1 win at Momentum Bank Ballpark on Wednesday night. Camden Duzeneck and Seth Beer each chipped in with a pair of RBI while Luke Albright continued his dominance against Midland.
Albright entered the game having faced the RockHounds three previous times and was undefeated, going 3-0 with a 2.12 ERA in his previous three appearances this year. The Amarillo right-hander allowed back-to-back singles in the bottom of the second but kept Midland off the scoreboard as he added a strikeout and was aided by a caught stealing and induced a force out to end the RockHounds threat.
Midland plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. A two-out walk and single kept the inning alive and allowed the first run to score on the errant throw by Duzenack working towards the first base bag.
Amarillo answered right back - taking the lead in the next half inning and never looking back. A one-out single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the top of the Amarillo order. Caleb Roberts tied the game with a sac fly before Duzenack gave the Sod Poodles the lead as he crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
After a scoreless seventh, Duzenack headed back to the plate to lead off the eighth. He hit a solo home run - the start of a four-run inning for Amarillo as they pulled away from Midland. A triple, walk, and two-out double by Beer scored another two runs for the Sod Poodles. Ivan Melendez brought Beer home with a double of his own to cap the night's scoring.
Austin Pope and Conor Grammes combined to keep the RockHounds off the scoreboard over the final three innings. Pope worked two innings where he allowed a hit and a walk while Grammes surrendered a one-out single. A game-ending double play secured the game two win for Amarillo.
The series continues with game three scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night. RHP Jamison Hill will take the ball for Amarillo looking for his third-straight win. The Amarillo right-hander will enter the start without allowing an earned run over his last 11.2 IP.
NOTES:
THREE WILL DUZE: Camden Duzenack turned in a 3-for-4 night at the plate that included a double, home run, and two RBI for Amarillo. He also plated three runs in the winning effort for Amarillo. It was his fifth three-hit game for Amarillo this season, second-most on the team this year behind Ryan Bliss' 12 3-hit games. The solo home run in the eighth inning was his fifth home run of the year and his first since leaving the yard on July 1st at HODGETOWN against Tulsa.
MMMMM, BEER: Seth Beer went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI for Amarillo. It was his second game with multiple doubles and his first since May 31 against Springfield. Beer now has 12 multi-hit games for Amarillo in 46 games played.
LUKE IS YOUR FATHER: Amarillo starter Luke Albright improved to 4-0 against Midland this year and lowered his ERA against the RockHounds to 1.57 in his four starts. He turned in another quality start on the mound for Amarillo after 6.0 IP with one run (not earned) coming across on his watch. He also added to his organizational lead in strikeouts with another seven to give him 107 on the campaign. His fifth quality start puts him back in a tie with Chad Patrick, who hurled one against Midland in the series opener. Albright and Patrick now each have five quality starts this year for the Sod Poodles.
STREAKING: Deyvison De Los Santos saw his season-high hit streak come to an end at 12 games after going 0-for-4 at the plate. The D-backs' no. 4-rated prospect did however extend his on-base streak to 13 games with a walk and came around to score. Jordan Lawlar also extended his on-base streak to 17 games with a walk in the contest.
