A day after the addition of catcher Stephen Vogt, Brewers All-Star closer Corey Knebel has been added to the Biloxi Shuckers roster. Knebel will rehab with the team and is eligible to play for the Shuckers in Thursday night's game against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
Knebel, 26, made three appearances for the Brewers this season before going on the disabled list with a hamstring injury he suffered on April 5. Last season, Knebel assumed the role as Milwaukee's closer, converting 39 of 45 save opportunities. His 39 saves ranked third in the National League, and he led the National League in games with 76. Knebel was named a 2017 All-Star, the only All-Star for the Brewers last season. He was also named the Brewers Pitcher of the Year for 2017 and the National League Reliever of the Month in August of 2017.
Originally taken 39th overall by the Detroit Tigers in the 2013 draft out of the University of Texas, Knebel went straight to Single-A West Michigan and was named a MiLB Organizational All-Star. He made his Major League debut on May 24, 2014 with Detroit, and appeared in eight games. Knebel was traded to the Texas Rangers at the deadline in 2014 with RHP Jake Thompson in exchange for RHP Joakin Soria. While with the Rangers organization, Knebel spent the rest of the season at Triple-A Round Rock.
The Brewers acquired Knebel on January 19, 2015 in a trade that sent RHP Yovani Gallardo to the Rangers in exchange for Knebel, SS Luis Sardiñas and RHP Marcos Diplan. Knebel pitched in 16 minor league games before joining the Brewers for good, appearing in 48 games with Milwaukee in 2015.
Knebel is the third player sent to Biloxi on a major league rehab assignment this season. LHP Boone Logan has already made three appearances with the Shuckers, and catcher Stephen Vogt played five innings in Wednesday night's game, going 1-for-2 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.
Biloxi continues their five-game series against the Jumbo Shrimp at MGM Park on Thursday night at 6:35 pm. The Shuckers are slated to send RHP Angel Ventura (0-1, 4.50) to the mound against Jumbo Shrimp RHP Pablo López (0-0, 0.00). On Double Play Thursday, $10 Double Play packages are available which include a game ticket and two drink vouchers. Additionally, fans can enjoy $2 Yuengling, $2 fountain sodas, $3 draft beer specials and $2 hot dogs courtesy of Yuengling, Coca-Cola, Polk's Meat Products and Kicker 108.
