Amarillo Devours Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits In 19-4 Landslide
Amarillo, Texas — The new record for runs and hits in a single game that the club set against the RoughRiders on Sunday afternoon lasted just two games. Amarillo exploded for 19 runs and tied their mark with 20 hits as they evened this six-game series at a game apiece.
Amarillo, Texas — The new record for runs and hits in a single game that the club set against the RoughRiders on Sunday afternoon lasted just two games. Amarillo exploded for 19 runs and tied their mark with 20 hits as they evened this six-game series at a game apiece.
Pointy Boots starter Tommy Henry set the tone early, retiring the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits in the top of the first inning in just six pitches. Outfielders Jake McCarthy and Stone Garrett combined for back-to-back doubles to give Amarillo the early lead.
Henry got himself into a bit of a jam walking three in the top of the second to load the bases but alternated walks and strikeouts to get himself out of any danger and left three Biscuits stranded.
The Pointy Boots then strung together seven hits that plated seven runs for a commanding 8-0 lead. Back-to-back infield singles and then a double off the bat of Dominic Miroglio got the scoring in the second started early. McCarthy hit his second triple in as many nights to score another two while Luis Basabe and Dominic Fletcher each drove in a pair of runs in the frame.
The Pointy Boots weren't done yet.
A walk and a single set the stage for McCarthy to blast his team-leading sixth home run of the year and leave the No. 30 rated prospect in the D-backs' farm system just a single shy of the cycle in the third inning. He had a chance to complete the feat as he came back up in the inning and got a soft dribbler down the third base side. A quick reaction from the pitcher provided the half-second needed to barely beat the speedy McCarthy to the bag. The damage was done though as Amarillo held a 15-1 lead through the third.
The long delays between innings coupled with tying a franchise-high five walks for Henry spelled an early night for the southpaw. He finished the game after 3.2 IP allowing six hits, giving up three runs -two of which were earned - with six strikeouts.
Miroglio added to his night, setting the club record for runs in a single-game when he belted his fourth home run of the season 400 ft over the left-center wall. The 17 runs at the time topped the 16 runs the team scored in their continuation game from June 5th that was played Sunday.
Stone Garrett hit his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to leadoff the inning as the Pointy Boots kept pouring it on the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits with another run in the inning to make it 19-3. The HBCB picked up their fourth run of the night in the top of the eighth with a solo shot off Levi Kelly.
McCarthy's bid for the first ever cycle in team history came up a single shy as he went down on strikes in each of his last two appearances.
For the second time this season everyone in the starting lineup for Amarillo recorded a hit and scored a run. McCarthy finished the game 3-for-6 with three runs scored and five RBI. Garrett set a new single-game team high with his four hits, coming up a triple shy in his bid for the cycle
Behind Henry, the pitching staff went 5.1 IP, giving up one run on two hits with five strikeouts and six walks. Mack Lemieux picked up his second win of the year. Kelly gave up the home run but also walked five and Edgar Arredondo threw 1.2 IP and gave up a hit with a pair of strikeouts.
Game three of this series will continue tomorrow night here at HODGETOWN with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.
Notes:
Offensive Prowess: The club mashed their way to a new franchise-high 19 runs with their offensive outburst in tonight's game. The team originally set the new franchise record when they scored 16 runs in the rain continuation game from June 5th that was played in the late afternoon on Sunday the 6th. The club also matched the new franchise record with their 20 hits.
Bi-Cycle Watch: Jake McCarthy nearly hit the club's first cycle in the third inning. A double, two-run triple, and three-run home run in his first three at-bats left him a single shy. He grounded out his second go-around in the third inning and then went down on strikes in his last two times up. Stone Garrett also found himself a leg shy of the feat. After a pair of doubles and his fifth home run of the year he only needed the triple to complete his quest. He also went down on strikes to end his bid in the bottom of the 8th.
Took A While: Tonight's three hour and 49 minute contest set the mark for the longest game in franchise history at home. It passed the three hour and 35 minute game played here at HODGETOWN on August 26, 2019 vs. Tulsa. Tonight's game fell just short of the longest game in team history - home or road - by two minutes. That still belongs to the three hour and 51 minute game between Amarillo and Tulsa on August 21, 2019 in Tulsa.
