CHATTANOOGA, TN - Five runs in the final three frames sent the Biloxi Shuckers (43-30) to a 5-2 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts (37-35) on Saturday night at AT&T Field.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh, Jake Gatewood started the frame with a single and moved to second two batters later on a fielding error by Alex Perez, putting men at first and second. Gabriel Noriega plated the first run of the game, singling the opposite way off RHP Sean Poppen (L, 1-4), his first RBI of the season with Biloxi, knotting the game at one. Luis Aviles Jr. Jr., playing in his second game with the Shuckers, delivered his first extra-base hit and RBI in the next at bat, doubling to the right field gap, sending in two runs before he was thrown out trying to stretch his double into a triple.
The top of the lineup delivered a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Troy Stokes Jr. drew a walk and motored to third on a double by Keston Hiura. Gatewood drove in both runners with a double inside the third base bag, giving the Shuckers a 5-1 lead. The Shuckers first baseman finished the night 2-for-4 with a double, 2 RBI and a run scored.
On the mound, All-Star RHP Thomas Jankins (W, 8-3) turned in his eighth quality start of the season, allowing just a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second. All told, the righty surrendered two hits, one run and two walks while striking out six. LHP Quintin Torres-Costa (H, 6) spun two perfect innings, and RHP Nate Griep finished off the game, allowing one run on three hits in the ninth.
Biloxi continues a six-game series in Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon at 1:15 PM CT.
