SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions bats have come alive late in games throughout the season and Saturday night was no different as they came from behind to topple the Memphis Redbirds 6-4. San Antonio trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the fifth before plating three runs in the home half and pulling ahead with a pair of runs in the eighth.
Troy Stokes Jr. crushed a solo home run on the first pitch he saw to lead off the bottom of the eighth and put the Missions in front for good. Cory Spangenberg then pushed a double down the left field line. The next batter, Jake Hager scorched a line drive right at third baseman Ramón Urías who then tried to double off Spangenberg at second base but the baseball hit Spangenberg and trickled into center field allowing the San Antonio third baseman to scamper home and complete the scoring.
Tyler Saladino thought he had his eighth home run of the season in the first inning after two umpires ruled his line drive had cleared the left field fence but were eventually overruled and the Missions shortstop was awarded just a double. Tyrone Taylor followed up Saladino's double with a two-bagger of his own to put San Antonio in front 1-0 after the first inning.
The Redbirds plated a pair of runs in both the second and third innings off Zack Brown to take a 4-1 advantage before the Missions took the lead.
Tristan Archer was perfect in relief for the Missions as he retired all nine batters he faced including a season-high four on strikeouts. Miguel Sanchez earned the win with a pair of scoreless innings, Deolis Guerra logged a hold, and Donnie Hart recorded his second save.
The Missions and Redbirds continue their five-game set Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium. Right-hander Aaron Wilkerson will start for the Missions against right-hander Jake Woodford for the Redbirds. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
