Named Southern League Player of the Week earlier in the day, Trent Grisham continued his role as the league's hottest hitter with a two-run home run on Monday, helping propel the Biloxi Shuckers (33-24) to a 3-0 win over the Mississippi Braves (25-30) at Trustmark Park. Jake Gatewood provided a home run of his own and Johan Belisario (W, 5-0) delivered another quality start with six shutout innings.
Biloxi's right-hander from Venezuela struck out three hitters over his first two innings and was backed with run support in the third. Luis Aviles Jr. led off against Tucker Davidson (L, 2-4) with a single and stole second base to advance into scoring position. Trent Grisham came to the plate in the following at bat and slugged a two-run home run to right field for a 2-0 lead. The home run was Grisham's tenth of the season and fourth in as many games to tie him for the team lead. The Brewers first-round draft picked walked three times in the game and reached base all four times.
Jake Gatewood followed with a home run to left field, going back-to-back with Grisham and giving the Shuckers a 3-0 advantage.
Belisario continued to work efficiently with the lead, stranding runners in the fourth and fifth innings before striking out a pair in a 1-2-3 sixth inning. He tied a season high with six strikeouts and earned his fourth winning decision over the last five starts. Cody Ponce (H,3) gave up a single to Alejandro Salazar and double to Jonathan Morales in the seventh but managed to strand both runners in scoring position. A 1-2-3 eight from Ponce quieted the chance of an M-Braves comeback and Luke Barker (S,6) retired the side in the ninth to earn his sixth save.
Joantgel Segovia impressed at the plate as well on Monday, enjoying his first three-hit game in Double-A, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and two singles. With the win the Shuckers remain in a first place tie in the South Division with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
The Shuckers continue their series with the M-Braves on Tuesday with a 6:35 pm first pitch. Biloxi will send RHP Trey Supak (6-2, 1.85) to the mound and Mississippi will throw RHP Jasseel De La Cruz (1-1, 4.91). The game can be heard locally in Biloxi on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App and can be seen on MiLB.TV.
