PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of July 24th through July 30th.

Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Jeremy Barfield has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of July 24th-July 30th. The 29-year old batted .444 (12-for-27) with one double, six home runs, 15 RBIs, nine runs scored, two walks, and a 1.148 slugging percentage in seven games last week. Barfield, who is a native of Houston, Texas, had at least one hit in all seven games he played in last week and collected multiple hits in six of those games, including going 2-for-4 with a pair of homers and three RBIs in an 8-3 win at Harrisburg on Saturday. Barfield also homered in four straight games from July 23rd-July 26th. The 6'2", 255 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in hits (12), home runs (6), RBIs (15), total bases (31), extra-base hits (7), slugging percentage (1.148), and OPS (1.648) last week and tied for the lead in runs scored (9). He also ranked among the weekly league leaders in batting average (.444-4th) and on-base percentage (.500-5th). Jeremy, who is the son of former MLB All-Star Jesse Barfield, was signed by the Boston Red Sox as a minor league free agent on May 25, 2017. He was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the eighth round of the 2008 draft out of San Jacinto College and also previously spent time in the Colorado organization.

Cory Taylor, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 24th-July 30th. The 6'2", 255 lb. hurler started one game for the Flying Squirrels last week and had a record of 1-0 with five strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Taylor, who is a native of Laredo, Texas, made his lone start of the week on Saturday in the opening game of a doubleheader against the visiting Erie SeaWolves and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of Richmond's 3-0 victory. Taylor retired the first 16 batters he faced in the game and did not allow a hit until Erie's Dawel Lugo tripled with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Taylor responded by retiring the next two batters he faced to close out the win and earn the first shutout of his career. He struck out five batters and walked one while giving up one hit over seven innings. The 23-year old led all Eastern League pitchers in batting average against (.045) last week and tied for the league lead in wins (1), complete games (1), shutouts (1), and ERA (0.00). He also ranked second in the league in WHIP (0.29). Cory, who has a record of 4-8 with a 4.20 ERA for Richmond this season, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the eighth round of the 2015 draft out of Dallas Baptist University.
