The Biloxi Shuckers (81-58, 40-29) fell to the Birmingham Barons (65-72, 33-36) 6-3 on Sunday evening at MGM Park. With a Shuckers loss and Blue Wahoos win, the Shuckers magic number to clinch the second half South Division title remains at one with one game left in the regular season.
RHP Marcos Diplan (L, 2-6) cruised through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth. Luis Basabe doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and tagged up to score on a sacrifice fly by Zack Collins. Diplan departed after walking the first two batters in the top of the sixth, and Collins drove in another run with an RBI double, giving the Barons a 2-0 edge. A pair of singles from Joel Booker and Collins in the seventh plated two more runs, stretching Birmingham to a 4-0 lead.
Barons' starter LHP Bernardo Flores (W, 3-5) kept the Shuckers bats in check, not allowing a runner to touch second base in his six scoreless innings. Biloxi got to the bullpen in the seventh, drawing four walks against RHP Mauricio Cabrera, including a walk to Gabriel Noriega that forced in a run. Tyler Heineman brought the Shuckers within two with a sacrifice fly to right, and Corey Ray slashed the deficit to just a run with an RBI single.
Birmingham widened the gap in the ninth, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded single by Alex Call to make it 6-3. The Shuckers put a man on base in the bottom of the ninth, but LHP Brian Clark (S, 3) induced a double play that ended the game.
Biloxi wraps up the regular season on Monday afternoon at 1:05 PM against the Barons. With a win or a Blue Wahoos loss, the Shuckers can clinch the second half South Division title, ensuring them four out of five possible home games in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. RHP Conor Harber (1-0, 1.53) takes the hill against former Shuckers LHP Kodi Medeiros (7-7, 3.46). On Labor Day, the Shuckers are offering a Labor Day Lunch Buffet, where for just $41 fans can watch the game from Bud Light Upper Deck and enjoy the full buffet in the Mercedes Benz club. It's also another Doggone Monday presented by Raising Cane's, where fans can purchase a $7 berm ticket and bring their furry friend to the game.
