MONTGOMERY, AL - After sweeping their first series of the season, the Biloxi Shuckers (20-11) dropped their opening game to the Montgomery Biscuits (13-18) 11-0 on Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Biscuits got on the board in the bottom of the first inning thanks to the first of two home runs by Ryan Boldt. Biloxi put together their best threat of the night in the next half inning against LHP Génesis Cabrera (W, 4-2). Jake Gatewood started the second with a single, and Dylan Moore followed with a base knock into center. Blake Allemand walked to load the bases, and Wendell Rijo worked the count to his favor, going up 3-1 against Cabrera. The lefty snuck a pair of fastballs past Rijo, striking out the Shuckers' second baseman. Clint Coulter then popped out to first before Dustin Houle struck out, ending the Shuckers threat.
RHP Thomas Jankins (L, 5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits. The big inning for the Biscuits came in the fourth, when Montgomery scored five runs against the Shuckers' starter. Brett Sullivan drove in a run with a single and scored on a two-run home run by Michael Russell, one of three allowed by Jankins on the night. Boldt, who had already homered in his first two at bats, tripled and came in to score on a Nick Solak single, pushing the Biscuits to a 7-0 lead.
After Cabrera completed his five innings, RHP Reece Karalus (S, 1) kept the Shuckers bats quiet, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings and allowing just a walk and a hit in the seventh and eighth inning, respectively.
Biloxi has a quick turnaround for Game Two of the series on Tuesday at 10:35 AM CT. The Shuckers are slated to send RHP Cody Ponce (1-1, 4.41) to the mound against Biscuits RHP Zach Lee (3-1, 2.45).
