PENSACOLA, Fla. (April 20, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, failed to get a timely hit and were shut out 5-0 by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in the series opener Saturday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
The BayBears (6-9) put 11 runners on base but left 10 stranded, including four in scoring position. Mobile went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, mustered just three hits in the game, and struck out 18 times despite drawing seven walks.
Sean Poppen (2-0) struck out a career-high 11 batters in five scoreless innings. Jovani Moran and Cody Stashak tossed two scoreless frames apiece to complete the game for Pensacola (11-5). It was the fourth time the BayBears have been shut out this season and the third time at the hands of the Blue Wahoos.
Tanner English reached base four times and either scored or drove in all five Pensacola runs. English crossed home in the second, fourth, and eighth, and he had a two-run single in the fifth.
Matt Ball (0-1) took the loss for the BayBears, giving up two runs on four hits in a four-inning start. Jason Alexander retired eight straight batters from the fifth to the eighth but allowed three runs, two earned, in 3 2/3 innings. Two-way player Bo Way came out of the bullpen to record the final out of the eighth inning in his return to the BayBears.
The BayBears continue the five-game road series against Pensacola Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Jesus Castillo (0-2, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Jorge Alcala (3-0, 2.30 ERA) for the Blue Wahoos.
