MOBILE, Ala. (May 4, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, were just two outs away from a shutout victory but let it slip away, falling 4-2 to the Chattanooga Lookouts Friday night in front of 4,296 fans on Pink in the Park Night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Griffin Canning pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his first start since last Saturday's combined no-hitter in Montgomery. He gave up just two hits and one walk, while recording five strikeouts.
The BayBears (12-15), donning specialty pink jerseys, provided early run support for Canning. Brennon Lund hit his first home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the first. Riley Unroe drove in Bo Way with a single in the fifth to increase the lead to 2-0.
Chattanooga (16-12) had runners in scoring position in four of the first eight innings but failed to get on the board. However, they tallied four runs on four hits in the ninth against Ryan Clark (1-1), who had not allowed a run in his first five outings with Mobile. After Brian Olson brought home the Lookouts first run with a one-out single, Tanner English followed with a two-run triple and scored on LaMonte Wade Jr's base hit.
Zach Gibbons drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the ninth against Sam Clay (1-2) to bring the tying run to the plate, but Unroe grounded out to end the game.
The BayBears continue the five-game home series against Chattanooga Saturday at 7:05 p.m. CDT. Southpaw Jose Suarez (1-0, 2.84 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Randy LeBlanc (3-1, 2.22 ERA) for the Lookouts.
