MOBILE, Ala. (April 5, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, dropped both games of the season-opening doubleheader Friday night against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Hank Aaron Stadium.
GAME 1:
Jeremy Beasley (0-1), the Angels No. 25 prospect, tossed three hitless innings to open the season but ran into trouble in the fourth. The Blue Wahoos broke the scoreless tie with a two-run Taylor Grzelakowski double, and Jimmy Kerrigan added a two-run homer.
The BayBears mustered just four singles, three of which stayed in the infield. Jorge Alcala (1-0) earned the win with five scoreless frames and struck out six batters. Jovani Morani kept the BayBears off the board for the final two innings to complete the shutout.
Angels No. 23 prospect Jesus Castillo , who was designated for assignment last Wednesday and sent outright to Mobile, gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits in three innings of relief.
GAME 2:
Brendon Sanger hit a game-tying home run off Cody Stashak (1-0) in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but Pensacola (2-0) ended up pulling out a 4-3 victory in eight innings to sweep the doubleheader.
Brandon Marsh , the Angels No. 3 prospect, drove in a pair of runs with his first two Double-A hits. The BayBears (0-2) went scoreless for the first 11 innings of the season before Marsh's RBI single in the fifth. After the Blue Wahoos scored two runs in the top of the eighth, Marsh brought home another run with his second single.
Matt Ball gave up runs in the first and fifth, but he allowed just three hits and retired 10 consecutive batters after the first inning. Ball struck out seven batters and issued just one walk in 4 2/3 innings. He did not factor in the decision. Zac Ryan (0-1) gave up the two Pensacola runs in the top of the eighth and was handed the loss.
The BayBears continue the five-game home series against Pensacola Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval (0-0, -.-- ERA), the Angels No. 12 prospect, is scheduled to make the start against southpaw Devin Smeltzer (0-0, -.-- ERA) for the Blue Wahoos.
