PENSACOLA, Fla. (July 25, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, dropped both games of Thursday's doubleheader to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 2-1 and 3-2 at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
GAME ONE:
The BayBears plated a run in the top of the seventh but left the tying run stranded on second base. Jhoan Urena scored on a passed ball to cut Pensacola's lead to 2-1. However, Jack Kruger was left in scoring position.
Tyler Carpenter (1-2) retired 13 of the next 14 batters after giving up two runs on four hits in the first inning. He lasted 5 2/3 innings and struck out five batters.
Edwar Colina (1-0) allowed just two hits through the first six innings, facing just one over the minimum. Despite allowing the unearned run in the ninth, he held on for a complete-game victory and matched his career-high with 10 strikeouts.
GAME TWO:
For the sixth time on the eight-game losing streak, the BayBears (40-61 overall, 13-20 second half) got on the board first. However, a two-run fifth inning was not enough, as Pensacola (53-50, 15-18) came back with two in the bottom of the fifth and walked off in the seventh. It was the second walk-off win of the series for the Blue Wahoos.
Jahmai Jones and Urena drove in the Mobile runs with back-to-back RBI singles. Jones finished the doubleheader with four hits after going 3-for-4 in the second game.
Max Herrmann retired the first 10 batters he faced and tossed four scoreless innings. Ryan Jeffers had a walk-off double for Pensacola in the bottom of the seventh off Luis Pena (2-1).
Tom Hackimer (4-2) earned the win for the Blue Wahoos, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to finish the game.
The BayBears wrap up the five-game road series against Pensacola Friday at 6:35 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Luis Madero (4-8, 5.82 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against southpaw Charlie Barnes (2-2, 3.29 ERA) for the Blue Wahoos.
