BayBears fall short in finale against Smokies

Klonowski retires side in order in five of seven innings but takes loss

MOBILE, Ala. (June 26, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, were defeated by the Tennessee Smokies 4-2 in the series finale Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Alex Klonowski (4-3) took the loss, despite retiring the first nine batters of the game and setting down the Smokies in order in five different innings. He matched his career-high with seven innings pitched, but he gave up one run in the fourth and three more in the seventh.
The BayBears (33-41 overall, 3-2 second half) scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third inning. Bo Way hit an RBI triple and scored on Forrestt Allday 's RBI single two batters later.
However, Tennessee (38-36, 2-3) scored the final four runs of the game. Trey Martin hit an RBI double in the fourth and then took the lead with two homers in the seventh. David Bote hit a game-tying solo home run and two batters later, Yasiel Balaguert put the Smokies in front with a two-run homer.
After giving up the two third-inning runs, Jen-Ho Tseng (7-2) finished the game with five scoreless frames. He held the BayBears to five hits in an eight-inning quality start.
The BayBears begin a six-game road series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Jake Jewell (4-4, 3.84 ERA) is slated to make the start against righty Joe Gunkel (1-4, 4.57 ERA) for the Jumbo Shrimp.
