MOBILE, Ala. (May 14, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, out-hit the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp but fell 3-1 Sunday afternoon on Mother's Day at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Wade Wass hit his team-high fifth home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth, to account for Mobile's only run. Wass has now hit four home runs in the last three series, including three in the last two home series. It made the score 3-1, but the BayBears (15-22) could not pull any closer.
Matt Tomshaw (4-1) held the BayBears to just the lone run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings, a quality start. It was the only run has allowed in 13 2/3 innings of work against Mobile this season.
Jacksonville (14-23) struck for three runs, two earned, against Alex Blackford (0-1), making his second start of the year for the BayBears. Alex Yarbrough opened the scoring with a two-run homer, his first of the season, in the third inning. Yarbrough, a former member of the Angels organization, was a teammate of Blackford's last year with Double-A Arkansas.
For the second straight game, Mobile's bullpen kept the Jumbo Shrimp off the board. Adam Hofacket , Abel De Los Santos , and Michael Dimock combined to throw four scoreless frames.
The BayBears continue the five-game home series Monday at 6:35 p.m. CT. Right-hander Grayson Long (1-2, 3.00 ERA) is slated to make the start against southpaw Mike Kickham (0-3, 3.97 ERA) for Jacksonville.
