MOBILE, Ala. (May 24, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, rallied from a five-run deficit and defeated the Birmingham Barons 7-6 in the series opener Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
After falling behind 5-0 through the first five and a half innings, the BayBears (20-26) scored six runs over the next three innings to take the lead. Birmingham (15-30) tied the game on Eddy Alvarez's two-out RBI single in the ninth, but Mobile drew four walks in the bottom of the inning to win the game. Forrestt Allday drew the final walk to plate Tim Arakawa .
Zach Gibbons and Allday both drove in runs in the sixth to ignite the comeback. Gibbons has now hit a double in four straight games, and Allday's two-bagger increased his on-base streak to 27.
Andrew Daniel tied the game with a three-run homer in the seventh, his second of the season. Daniel finished the game 2-for-3 with a triple earlier in the night.
Jake Peter and Nick Basto hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning for Birmingham. Cameron Seitzer went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the sixth to increase the lead to 5-0.
Ivan Hernandez (2-0) earned his second win, pitching two innings of relief and allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Wednesday marked the third walk-off victory for the BayBears and the largest comeback win of the season.
The BayBears continue a five-game home series against Birmingham Thursday at 6:35 p.m. CT. Right-hander Alex Blackford (0-2, 4.02 ERA) is slated to make the start against righty Michael Kopech (3-2, 2.76 ERA) for the Barons.
