BOWIE, M.D — The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, shut out the Akron RubberDucks by a 2-0 final on Thursday evening at Prince George’s Stadium.

Four right-handed pitchers combined on the effort for Bowie (16-13). Starter Trace Bright carved up Akron (19-11) bats to the tune of five strikeouts through 4.1 innings with just three hits allowed. Bright was backed by a phenomenal team-effort in the field, including a double play turned by Frederick Bencosme, Anthony Servideo, and Dylan Beavers in the second inning, a caught stealing from catcher Connor Pavolony in the third, and a full-extension diving catch in the left-center field alley from centerfielder Donta’ Williams in the fourth.

Bright passed the ball to Dylan Heid (W, 2-0) in the fifth who retired all five batters he faced with a trio of strikeouts. Houston Roth recorded the next five outs with a pair of strikeouts, before Ryan Watson (S, 1) notched a four out save to get Bowie across the line.

Offensively, Bowie did damage early against Akron southpaw Ryan Webb (L, 1-2). Designated hitter Samuel Basallo led off the bottom of the first with a single, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly from outfielder Jud Fabian. Rehabbing Orioles’ outfielder Austin Hays singled in the third and was driven home on an opposite-field double by Beavers, who recorded a pair of hits and reached base three times on Thursday.

The Baysox bats were kept mostly quiet from there, totaling four hits on the night, despite drawing six walks as well. However, the pitching backed Bowie on the night, improving them to an Eastern League-best 12-5 at home on the season.

The Baysox continue their six-game series against the RubberDucks Friday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Brandon Young (0-0, 4.22 ERA) will go for Bowie against LHP Doug Nikhazy (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for Akron.
