BOWIE, M.D — The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, were held scoreless by the Akron RubberDucks for a second consecutive game on Saturday evening at Prince George’s Stadium, falling by a 6-0 final.
A 30-minute rain delay interrupted the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, as showers persisted throughout the first half of the evening. However, on both sides of the delay, the RubberDucks (21-11) found success with the long ball, while the Baysox (16-15) struggled to get the bat going once again.
Bowie starter Seth Johnson (L, 0-4) went just three innings for the Baysox, allowing a pair of solo home runs on Akron’s only two hits against him on the night. Alexfri Planez hit his first of two on the evening to open the scoring in the second, before Petey Halpin homered for the second time in as many games in the third to double the RubberDucks’ lead.
Akron tallied two more, both unearned runs, in the top of the fifth inning. Planez would punctuate the evening for the RubberDucks with his second long ball of the night in the seventh against Baysox right-hander Carlos Tavera, who contributed 4.1 innings of relief.
Akron right-hander Tommy Mace (W, 4-1) held the Bowie bats to just three hits through six innings, despite a multi-hit effort from outfielder John Rhodes. Relievers Davis Sharpe and Tyler Thornton finished off the final three frames to seal the shutout win.
Akron pitching has kept Bowie off the board for 23 consecutive innings of play following the shutout on Saturday night – the team’s fifth time being shut out in a game in 2024.
The Baysox conclude their six-game series against the RubberDucks Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm. RHP Alex Pham (1-1, 6.57 ERA) will go for Bowie, as the Baysox look for a series split against LHP Rodney Boone (2-0, 2.84 ERA) and Akron.
