FORT MYERS, Fla. - Clark Beeker turned in his best performance of the season, as the Fort Myers Miracle took down the Jupiter Hammerheads, 5-4, to win two of three from the Florida State League South Division leaders.
Beeker (1-1) earned his first win of the year in his longest outing of the season. The High Point, North Carolina native pitched six innings. He allowed one run on six hits.
In the fifth, Carson Crites and Mark Contreras each singled before Daniel Castano uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Crites to score the game's first run. Later in the inning, Luis Arraez pushed the lead to 2-0 with a single to right.
Castano (4-2), a former St. Louis Cardinals draft pick, pitched into the sixth before tiring. The left-hander tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.
Jupiter closed the deficit to 2-1 on a Joe Dunand home run in the sixth. Dunand now has 29 runs batted in on the year.
In the seventh, Fort Myers extended its lead to 3-1 on a Taylor Grzelakowski double. Grzelakowski, who finished 2-4, has five multi-hit games in his last ten games.
Fort Myers made it 5-1 in the eighth on a Contreras RBI double and an Arraez sacrifice fly.
The Hammerheads made things interesting in the ninth. Stone Garrett crushed a two-run home run to right off Logan Lombana to close to within 5-3. Later in the inning, Brian Miller cut the Miracle lead to 5-4 on an RBI single to center. After loading the bases with two out, Kevin Marnon retired Riley Mahan on a ground out to third to earn his first save of the season.
Lombana lasted just 1/3 inning and allowed three runs. Marnon pitched the final 2/3 inning. He allowed two hits and a walk.
The Miracle are the first team to hand Jupiter a series loss this season. The Hammerheads were 6-0-2 in their first eight series.
The Miracle continue their six-game home stand Monday night when the Charlotte Stone Crabs, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, come to town for a three-game series. First pitch is 7:00 p.m.
