Beeker goes the distance in shutout of LKings

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 29, 2017) - Clark Beeker turned in the strongest start of the season against the Clinton LumberKings, throwing nine shutout innings to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 2-0 win on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Perfect Game Field.
Clinton (14-21, 45-57) tallied just five hits in the game off Beeker (10-3) who did not allow the LumberKings to recorded more than one hit in the same inning. The only extra base hit of the game belonged to Clinton. Gareth Morgan lined a ball off the base of the left field wall for a second inning double but went no further.
The LumberKings failed to get a runner past second during the game.
The Kernels (16-19, 55-50) received all their offense from Joe Cronin. The Cedar Rapids shortstop drove home both of the Kernels runs. In the bottom of the third inning, Cronin singled home Christian Cavaness for the game's first run.
In the bottom of the fifth, LumberKings starter, Nick Wells allowed the final run of the game. Gorge Munoz singled with one out in the inning and moved to third on a combination wild pitch and single. Cronin then lifted a ball to left field for a sacrifice fly.
Wells (4-8) was given the loss despite a strong six inning outing. He allowed two runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out four.
Beeker's nine inning shutout was his second complete game of the year and the first complete game shutout thrown against the LumberKings this season. During the nine shutout frames, he struck out seven while not allowing a walk.
The game featured just three pitchers, Beeker, Wells, and Tim Viehoff who combined to not allow a walk in a combined 17 innings of work.
Clinton will play game two of their four games series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The LumberKings will throw right-handed pitcher Ryne Inman (0-1, 16.88) against Kernels left-handed pitcher Anthony Marzi (3-1, 1.35). Game time is slated for 2:05 PM (C.D.T.) with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 1:50 PM, Erik Oas will be on the call. 
The LumberKings return to Ashford University Field on Saturday, August 5 with a four-game home stand against the Peoria Chiefs. Saturday and Sunday of the home stand feature giveaways before the game and Saturday's festivities will conclude with a post-game concert performance from Slough Boys.
