WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 22, 2019) - Fayetteville's Seth Beer and Down East's Tyler Phillips have earned the Carolina League's Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week awards, respectively, for the week of April 15-21, the league office announced Monday.
Beer smashed his way to his first professional weekly honor by pacing the Carolina League in slugging percentage (.957), OPS (1.397) and total bases (22), while sharing the circuit's lead in home runs (three) and doubles (four). One of his three home runs was a historic one, as he clubbed the first home run by a Woodpecker at new Segra Stadium on Thursday in the ballpark's inaugural game.

The Astros' first-round pick last year out of Clemson University, Beer has been one of the Carolina League's most dangerous hitters so far this season, boasting a top-five spot in several offensive categories-RBIs (17; 3rd), total bases (34; T-3rd), home runs (three; T-5th), runs (12; T-6th), OPS (.942, 7th), slugging percentage (.540; 9th) and hits (21; T-9th).
Phillips also collected his first Minor League weekly honor by spinning a dominant outing at Salem on Tuesday. The Lumberton, N.J., native blanked the Red Sox over seven innings, during which he scattered six hits and struck out six. Though Phillips did not factor into the decision, the Wood Ducks claimed a 2-0 victory thanks to a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.
Down East has surged out of the gates to a league-leading 13-5 mark, and Phillips has been critical to that success. The former 16th-round pick has yet to allow a run in three outings spanning 19.0 innings. Phillips is the only Minor Leaguer who has logged more than 18.0 innings and has yet to surrender a run.
