(Burlington, IA) - The Burlington Bees (40-49) fell to the Fort Wayne Tin Caps (39-51) 8-1 in a rain-shortened game on Wednesday night at Community Field.
Fernando Tatis Jr. led off the game with a solo home run to left, giving the Tin Caps a 1-0 lead. Fort Wayne wasn't done in the first inning, scoring again thanks to the long ball, this time from Jorge Oña, extending the lead to 2-0. Buddy Reed started the Tin Caps' offense again in the second inning with a one-out double. Reed then came home to score on a Jack Suwinski single, pushing the lead to 3-0.
The Bees got on the board in the sixth inning. Brennan Morgan and Julian Leon both reached on errors to start the inning. Richie Fecteau then blooped a single to left loading the bases. John Schuknecht drove in the Bees only run of the game with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Fort Wayne sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the seventh inning, scoring five runs. Fernando Tatis Jr. added to his big night, hitting a grand slam in the Tin Caps' five-run outburst.
The Bees put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh but the rain came and the game was never resumed. Fort Wayne starter Pedro Avila (4-1) earned the win while Andrew Vinson (5-8) was charged with the loss. The Bees and the Tin Caps finish the series on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. as Jose Suarez makes the start for the Bees against Jim McDade for Fort Wayne. NOTES: The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Bees. The Bees are now 1-6 against the East Division at home this season. Jordan Zimmerman extended his hitting streak to 17 games while Derek Jenkins extended his to eight games.
