(Burlington, IA) - The Burlington Bees (10-17) lost their fourth straight home game, losing to the South Bend Cubs (19-11), 7-5, on Monday night at Community Field.
Both teams were held scoreless for the first three innings before the South Bend Cubs took the lead in the fourth inning. Brandon Cummins started the inning with a walk. Vimael Machin gave the Cubs the lead with a double to left, scoring Cummins. Luis Ayala then made it a 2-0 lead for the Cubs with a triple scoring Machin.
Jahmai Jones opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a lead-off double. After Brennon Lund reached on a fielder's choice, Jordan Zimmerman doubled to center, scoring both Jones and Lund, tying the game at two. With two runners on and one out, Sam McDonnell lined a single into center, scoring both Jack Kruger and Brennan Morgan, putting the Bees on top, 4-2.
The lead wouldn't last long as the Cubs tied the game in the top of the fifth. With two runners on and two outs, Jhonny Pareda singled up the middle, scoring two runs, tying the game at four. It was Zimmerman who again give the Bees the lead with a single to score Lund, putting the Bees back in front, 5-4.
South Bend scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a two-run triple by Zack Short and a Brandon Cummins sacrifice fly, giving the Cubs a 7-5 lead. The Bees could not recover, losing the series opener to the Cubs, 7-5.
South Bend starter Tyson Miller (2-2) earned the win for the Cubs while Mike Kaelin (1-1) was charged with the loss and Jared Cheek (1) picked up the save.
