Chris Betts drove in five runs and Caleb Sampen spun 6.0 innings of shutout baseball as the Bowling Green Hot Rods avoided a series sweep with a 10-0 victory over the Lake County Captains. Bowling Green improved to 62-44, 23-13 in the second half, ahead of Tuesday's series opener in Dayton against the Dragons, which is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT.

After two scoreless frames from Sampen, the Hot Rods took an early lead against Lake County starter Eli Lingos in the second. Erik Ostberg led off the frame with a single to left, then went to third when Grant Witherspoon doubled off the left-field wall. Betts followed with a double into the right-field corner, scoring both runners to spot Sampen a 2-0 lead.
An inning later, the Hot Rods tacked on against Lingos. Ford Proctor led off with a double, which was followed by a walk to Osmy Gregorio. Jonathan Aranda followed with a double down the left-field line, scoring Proctor. Two batters later, Witherspoon, drove in Gregorio with a groundout. Betts then capped off the inning with single to right that brought home Aranda, giving Bowling Green a 5-0 advantage.
Caleb Sampen continued to put up zeroes as his offense continued to give him more runs. Witherspoon drove in Bowling Green's sixth run of the game in the fifth, bringing home Ostberg with a double.
After Sampen gave way to Nick Padilla in the seventh, the Hot Rods wrapped up the contest in style. Witherspoon drove in Gregorio with a groundout, which was followed by Betts, who launched a two-run blast over the right-field bullpen and out of Bowling Green Ballpark, giving him five RBI for the day and a 9-0 lead for Bowling Green.
The Hot Rods made it a perfect ten in the eighth inning as Gregorio doubled home Tony Pena to put Bowling Green up 10-0, which wound up as the final score when Michael Costanzo threw a scoreless ninth inning.
Sampen (8-4) fired 6.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out five in earning the win. Padilla threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hits and striking out three. Costanzo tossed a scoreless ninth, walking one and striking out one.
