A double-digit first inning from the Round Rock Express (31-25) helped take down the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (24-32) 16-4 on Saturday night at Dell Diamond.

Round Rock struck for 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning, using eight hits, three walks and a fielder’s choice to open up the double-digit advantage. RHP Kyle McGowin (L, 1-1) was knocked out after facing eight batters in the first inning.

Sugar Land started to chip away at the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Justin Dirden led off the inning with a triple and Joe Perez drove him in with an opposite field home run, his fifth of the year. The home run extended Perez’ on-base streak to 11 games and was his second straight day with a home run.

In the fifth, Jackson Loftin began the frame with a double, his third straight game with a double, and came in and scored on a single by Bligh Madris. Perez tripled to start the sixth and scored on a ground out by JJ Matijevic against LHP Cody Bradford (W, 7-1). Round Rock would push their margin back out to nine runs on a two-run homer by Sandro Fabian in the bottom of the sixth and tacked on three more in the bottom of the eighth.

The Space Cowboys conclude their seven-game series against the Express on Sunday evening. RHP Bryan Garcia (2-3, 7.09 ERA) is scheduled to toe the slab for Sugar Land opposite Express RHP Robert Dugger (1-3, 4.50) for a 6:05 pm first pitch.
