CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Biloxi Shuckers (44-20) scored in five different innings in a 6-3 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts (37-36) on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Field. RHP Marcos Diplan spun five innings in his Double-A debut, allowing a pair of unearned runs.
The Shuckers got on the board in the second thanks to a solo home run by Lucas Erceg that left the confines of AT&T Field, clearing the right field stands for Erceg's sixth bomb of the year.
Diplan allowed his only runs in the bottom of the fourth. A fielding error by Luis Aviles Jr. Jr. allowed Chris Paul to reach with one out, and two batters later Jaylin Davis muscled a two-run homer to straightaway centerfield, his first with Chattanooga, to put the Lookouts up 2-1. Diplan finished his outing by facing just three in the fifth, getting a double play to end the frame. All told, the 21-year-old righty allowed five hits and a walk while striking out two.
Max McDowell knotted the game at two in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to left, his first with Biloxi. Diplan was in line for the win after the top of the sixth, when Jake Gatewood doubled off the top of the batters eye in centerfield, scoring Keston Hiura to make it 3-2 Shuckers.
The Lookouts found a run in the bottom of the sixth. Andy Wilkins tripled off the right field wall and scored on a throwing error by Aviles Jr., leveling the game at three. RHP Cody Ponce (W, 4-4) shut down Chattanooga after that, giving up just a single in his next 2.2 innings of work.
For a second straight game, the Shuckers found the go-ahead run in the seventh. McDowell doubled to leadoff the frame and scored on a two-bagger from Aviles Jr. off RHP Ryan Eades (L, 2-2), pushing the Shuckers in front 4-3. Aviles would double again to start the ninth inning and motored home on a single up the middle by Troy Stokes Jr., giving Biloxi a 5-3 edge. Lucas Erceg finished the rally, singling to left to score Stokes, stretching the Shuckers advantage to 6-3.
RHP Nate Griep (S, 22) worked around a couple of base runners in the ninth, inducing a 6-3 double play ball from pinch hitter Mitchell Kranson to close out the game. The save is his league-leading 22nd of the season.
