For a second straight day, the longball was the decider between the Mississippi Braves (36-38, 3-2 2nd half) and the Biloxi Shuckers (43-32, 2-3) as Cristian Pache's solo home run was the lone run scored in a 1-0 M-Braves win over the Shuckers. With the loss, the Shuckers drop just their second series at MGM Park this season.
Leading off the game, Pache drove a 1-2 pitch from RHP Bowden Francis (L, 4-5) over the left-field wall, Pache's tenth homer of the season, to plate the only run of the night. Francis would work his way around baserunners for the remainder of the night, not allowing another run over six innings while walking one and striking out six. It was the third consecutive quality start for the Shuckers righty.
Biloxi had an immediate chance for a response in the bottom of the first. Luis Aviles Jr. worked a walk against LHP Tucker Davidson (W, 3-4) and C.J. Hinojosa slapped a single to right, putting men on the corners with no outs. Davidson worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts and a caught stealing of Hinojosa at second to strand the tying run at third. The righty used three double plays by his defense to complete six scoreless innings against the Shuckers.
In the seventh, Dillon Thomas roped a one-out double into right, but RHP Connor Johnstone (H, 3) induced a pop out from Cooper Hummel and struck out Joantgel Segovia to end the frame. Max McDowell doubled to start the eighth and Hinojosa drew a two-out walk, but yet again Johnstone was able to get a strikeout to leave two Shuckers runners on base.
RHP Drew Rasmussen and RHP Devin Williams combined to work three scoreless frames, keeping Biloxi within striking distance. RHP Cladio Custodio (S, 1) entered in the ninth for Mississippi and induced two flyouts and a ground out to secure his first save of the season.
Biloxi now heads to Pensacola for their lone second-half series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos starting on Tuesday night. LHP Cameron Roegner (1-1, 5.40) will toe the slab for the Shuckers while the Blue Wahoos have not named a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm at Blue Wahoos Stadium. The game can be heard locally in Biloxi on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App and can be seen on MiLB.TV.
