After their series opener was postponed on Tuesday, the Biloxi Shuckers (48-48, 14-15 2nd Half) won both games of their doubleheader, 3-2 and 2-0, over the Mississippi Braves (46-52, 17-12 2nd Half) on Wednesday night at Trustmark Park.
Game 1
Biloxi jumped out to a lead in the top of the second inning. Cam Devanney worked a lead-off walk before Tristen Lutz smashed a two-run homer over the left-field wall, his 10th of the season and third in four games, to put the Shuckers’ ahead 2-0.
The Shuckers had a scoring chance that went by the wayside in the top of the third inning. Andruw Monasterio started the frame with a double and Garrett Whitley followed with a walk. RHP Tanner Gordon got a strikeout and a lineout from Devanney for the first two outs, but Lutz worked a walk to load the bases. However, a lineout to center by Felix Valerio left the bases full.
Mississippi struck back to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning. Riley Delgado led off with a single and Cody Milligan was hit by a pitch to put two men on with no outs. LHP Nick Bennett (W, 6-8) struck out the next batter and induced a fielder’s choice, giving the M-Braves men on the corners with two outs, but back-to-back singles leveled the contest at 2-2. Bennett ended up tossing 5.0 innings, allowing just the two runs while not walking a batter and striking out seven.
An error helped the Shuckers score the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth. With two outs in the inning, Valerio reached on a throwing error by Vaughn Grissom and advanced to second on a balk by RHP Odalvi Javier (L, 2-4). Brent Diaz then singled to left, allowing Valerio to race in and score, putting Biloxi back in front 3-2.
RHP J.C. Mejia (H, 1) entered in the bottom of the sixth inning and tossed a perfect frame in his first Major League rehab appearance, striking out two. RHP Cam Robinson (S, 2) was tasked with the bottom of the seventh and gave up just a one-out single before striking out the next two batters to secure his second save at Double-A and Minor League leading 21st of the season.
Game 2
Biloxi broke up a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. Monasterio singled off RHP Allan Winans (L, 0-1) and stole second base before Devanney singled up the middle, driving in Monasterio to make it 1-0 Shuckers.
RHP T.J. Shook struck out the side in the first, third and fourth inning, navigating a bases-loaded jam in the fourth to preserve the shutout. Though he didn’t receive a decision, Shook struck out nine over 4.0 innings, a new high in strikeouts at Double-A for the righty, limiting the M-Braves to just three hits.
In the home half of the fifth, RHP Nash Walters (W, 6-2) stranded a base runner, striking out two and allowing just a hit in one inning of work.
Thomas Dillard gave the Shuckers some breathing room with a solo home run to right in the sixth, his ninth of the year, pushing Biloxi to a 2-0 lead. RHP Luis Contreras (H, 2) hurled a scoreless sixth and RHP Zach Vennaro (S, 9) secured the save, striking out one in a scoreless seventh.
Biloxi continues their six-game series against the M-Braves on Thursday night at Trustmark Park. The Shuckers are scheduled to send LHP Brandon Knarr (1-3, 4.13) to the hill opposite Mississippi RHP Darius Vines (6-4, 4.14) for a 6:35 pm first pitch.
