Behind a quality outing from their starter, the Montgomery Biscuits (54-49, 26-15 2nd Half) defeated the Biloxi Shuckers (55-53, 21-20 2nd Half) 4-1 on Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Biloxi’s best scoring chance against Biscuits’ RHP Michael Mercado (W, 3-6) came in the top of the first inning. Garrett Whitley worked a one-out walk and moved to second on an opposite-field single by Tristen Lutz. Zavier Warren bounced into a fielder’s choice that cancelled out Lutz, placing men on the corners with two outs, but Mercado struck out the final batter of the inning to strand two.
Montgomery took the lead in the bottom of the first on a triple and a sacrifice fly and doubled their advantage on a double and a single against LHP Brandon Knarr (L, 1-6), going in front 2-0. A pair of singles and an error led to another run in the bottom of the third, widening Montgomery’s margin to 3-0.
Knarr finished his night by retiring the final eight batters that he faced. Across five innings, the lefty gave up three runs, two earned, while walking one and striking out six. On the other side, Mercado retired 11 straight at one point and allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings.
The Shuckers struck for their only run in the top of the seventh inning. Devanney started the inning with a single and moved into scoring position on a two-out walk to Diaz. With Jason Lopez batting, Devanney stole third and Diaz advanced to second on a passed ball before Lopez ripped a single into left. Devanney came around to score but Diaz was thrown out at third for the second out. RHP Carlos Garcia (H, 2) induced a flyout from the next batter, bringing the rally to a close.
After Montgomery added a run in the bottom of the eighth, the Shuckers brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth. Facing LHP Jose Lopez (S, 8), Warren ripped a double into center field and Devanney followed with a walk, bringing Felix Valerio up as the tying run. Valerio laced a ball towards the right-field wall, but right fielder Kameron Misner ran it down for the out and doubled up Warren at second. Lopez struck out the final batter he faced to bring the game to a close.
Biloxi continues their six-game series against the Biscuits on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. RHP Victor Castañeda (3-5, 3.71) takes the mound for the Shuckers opposite Biscuits’ RHP Sean Hunley (3-1, 3.79) for a 6:35 pm first pitch.
