Ruben Cardenas hit a walk-off home run for the Montgomery Biscuits (31-29) to top the Biloxi Shuckers (19-43) 5-4 on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

Biloxi had a chance to plate the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning. Brent Diaz worked a lead-off walk against RHP Chris Muller (W, 1-0) and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Aguilar. Diaz advanced to third on a fly out to center by Cam Devanney but was left stranded at third as Garrett Mitchell grounded out to short. Cardenas then hit a home run to center on the third pitch of his at bat from RHP Braden Webb (L, 2-5), who came back out for the ninth after striking out the side in the eighth.

The Shuckers rallied to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. Trailing 4-3, Brice Turang tripled to right field with one out, his second extra-base hit of the night, bringing Alexander Palma to the plate. Palma lifted a single into center field, scoring Turang to knot the contest at 4-4. Mitch Longo would single for his fourth hit of the game with two outs and the runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch, but Gabriel Garcia struck out swinging to leave two men in scoring position.

Biloxi struck first in the top of the second inning. Luis Castro started the frame with a triple to right and came in to score when Longo singled through the shift, giving Biloxi a 1-0 lead. Montgomery struck back in the bottom of the inning when Jim Haley hit a solo home run to left, his eighth of the year, tying the game at 1-1.

The longball helped the Shuckers reclaim the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Longo doubled to left field with one out and Garcia followed with a 427-foot home run to left, his third of the season and second in as many games, to give Biloxi a 3-2 lead.

Montgomery drew within a run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run to left by Niko Hulsizer, his second of the season. The Biscuits would then take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI double from Garrett Whitley, putting the Biscuits in front 4-3.

Even though he didn’t factor into the decision, RHP Noah Zavolas turned in his longest outing of the season, tossing seven frames and allowing four runs on seven hits while walking just one batter and striking out four.

Biloxi continues their series against Montgomery on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium. RHP Lucas Erceg is set to open for the Shuckers, while LHP Kenny Rosenberg will open for the Biscuits. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9 and can be streamed on MiLB TV.
