The transformation the Blue Wahoos make every Thursday home game into the Pensacola Mullets has proven a good look this season.
They made it happen again, following a 90-minute rain delay, by starting fast and riding quality relief performances to a 7-3 victory against the Chattanooga Lookouts.
A crowd of 3,888 patiently waited through the rain and ensuing delay to see the Blue Wahoos win their third consecutive against the Lookouts, the Cincinnati Reds Double-A affiliate. Pensacola is now 20-7 against the Southern League North Division
Pensacola is now 5-2 in the power blue, fuchsia uniforms, bearing the logo of the Mullets, a name that finished second in fan balloting 10 years ago for team nickname. The team is 0-5 in the other specialty jerseys worn this season.
Starter Jeff Lindgren continued string of solid outings, working into the seventh to pick up is fourth win in his last five starts. Lindgren (4-1) lowered his earned run average to 2.87 after striking out eight, allowing just one walk and three hits before lifted with two outs in the seventh.
Two of those hits were home runs by the Lookouts Allan Cerda, who generated all of Chattanooga’s runs. But aside from those swings, Lindgren kept Chattanooga hitters off balance with his array of breaking pitches and the way he can locate his fastball so well.
This was the eighth time in his 10 Blue Wahoos starts that Lindgren worked five or more innings to qualify for a quality start. The only time the Lookouts had multiple runners on base was in the fifth inning when he gave up a single, then had Cerda blast his second homer off Lindgren. 4,
With the win,the Blue Wahoos, took a 3-0 lead in this homestand series, which has been affected by inclement weather each day.
All seven of the Blue Wahoos' runs were scored in the first two innings. Ray-Patrick Didder began the early surge with a one-out single. With two outs, the next four batters reached. Griffin Conine singled and Bubba Hollins delivered a two-run single. J.D. Orr walked and Cobie Fletcher-Vance hit a two-run double.
In the second inning, Jan Mercado and Jose Devers started the rally with singles, followed by Troy Johnston's two-run double. Devers, Didder, Johnston and Hollins all had two hits apiece in the game, as part of the Blue Wahoos' 11 hits.
Dylan Bice, Zach Leban and Colton Hock all pitched innings of scoreless relief to back up Lindgren.
