BOX SCORE

AKRON, OH. — The Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, were shutout 4-0 at the hands of the Akron RubberDucks, Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians, on Friday night at Canal Park.

Akron (37-18, 74-50) went on top early courtesy of two big swings against right-handed starter Alex Pham. Akron’s Kahlil Watson opened the scoring with a two-run shot in the second, before Yordys Valdes added a solo homer in the third. Those were the first two homers allowed by Pham (L, 7-4) since June 28, who went four and two-thirds innings on Friday and struck out five.

Bowie’s bullpen held down the fort well, particularly Jakob Hernandez, as the left-hander worked two scoreless innings and struck out four batters, allowing just one hit in the process. Akron did tack on a run in the eighth against Bowie, as Watson picked up his third RBI of the night on a single.

The Baysox (25-30, 57-66) found runs hard to come by against one of the Eastern League’s top arms in right-hander Austin Pederson (W, 6-2), who struck out five and scattered five hits across six innings. Fredrick Bencosme led the charge on Friday with a pair of hits, but Ross Carver and Alaska Abney held serve out of the RubberDucks bullpen to complete the Akron shutout.

The Baysox trail the RubberDucks by 12 games in the Eastern League Southwest second half standings with 14 games remaining in the regular season. Bowie resumes its six-game set with Akron on Saturday night, as right-hander Peter Van Loon (1-1, 2.67 ERA) takes the mound for the Baysox, opposite of righty Aaron Davenport (7-4, 2.91 ERA) for the RubberDucks. First pitch is set for 6:05p.m. ET from Canal Park.
