PENSACOLA, FL -- Great pitching by Kolby Allard and solid defense shut down the Pensacola (28-33, 68-63) offense as the Braves cruised to a 5-0 victory in game one of the five game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Mississippi did not allow a Blue Wahoo player to reach second base.
Mississippi (19-40, 53-76) scored early in the second when Alex Jackson and Joey Meneses walked to lead off the inning. Travis Demeritte then singled to load the bases, and Jackson scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Neslony.
Dylan Moore got things started for Mississippi in the third with a solo home run. Austin Riley then doubled and scored one batter later on a double by Joey Meneses to extend the M-Braves lead to 3-0.
The Braves picked up single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Jared James led off with a double and scored on Moore's double to right center. In the sixth, Neslony walked and advanced to second on Allard's sacrifice bunt. Neslony then scored on an infield single by James, giving Mississippi a 5-0 lead.
The M-Braves got another quality start from Allard, as he pitched seven shutout innings, scattering five hits while striking out nine. Mauricio Cabrera and Jacob Webb pitched one inning each in relief.
Game two of the five game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium is scheduled for a 4:05 PM Sunday. Mississippi sends RHP Mike Soroka (11-8) to the mound, and Pensacola counters with RHP Keury Mella (3-10).
