Break Camp Roster Highlighted By No. 1 Prospect Anthony Volpe

Bridgewater, New Jersey – The New York Yankees have announced the 2022 break camp roster for their Double-Affiliate, the Somerset Patriots. New York’s top prospect, INF Anthony Volpe, will start the season in Somerset.
Volpe’s strong 2021 campaign vaulted him into the top ranking in the Yankees system by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline. In 109 games, Volpe hit .294, slugged 27 home runs, drove in 86 RBI, and stole 33 bases in 412 at-bats. He led all of Minor League Baseball in runs (113) and finished the season among the minor league leaders in doubles (3rd, 35), extra base hits (3rd, 68), and total bases (9th, 249).

The roster is highlighted by five top 20 Yankees prospects according to MLB Pipeline. Volpe (No. 1) is joined by LHP Ken Waldichuk (No. 6), RHP Luis Medina (No. 12), RHP Randy Vasquez (No. 16) and OF Brandon Lockridge (No. 18).
Waldichuk, the organization’s top left-handed pitching prospect, combined for a 6-3 record, 3.03 ERA over 110.0 innings pitched in 23 games between High-A Hudson Valley and Somerset last season. He led the way with a team-best 108 strikeouts for the Patriots in 2021.
Medina was 6-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 106.1 innings pitched in 22 games, mostly in Somerset in 2021. The Dominican hurler regularly reaches triple digits and is regarded to have one of the best fastballs in the organization.
Vasquez has been one of the Yankees' most consistent pitching prospects. He ended 2021 in Somerset, going 2-1 with a 4.22 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 12.1 innings pitched.
Lockridge is the third-ranked outfield prospect in New York’s system and is following a career year in many areas. In 43 games with the Patriots last season, he hit .328 with 10 home runs, 13 stolen bases and an OPS of .939.
C Josh Breaux (No. 26) led Hudson Valley in home runs last season before being promoted to the Patriots. He added six more home runs over 26 games at the Double-A level.
OF Elijah Dunham (No. 27) split his first season of pro ball in 2021 between Low-A Tampa and Hudson Valley. He hit .263 with 13 home runs and 57 RBI in 93 games for the clubs.
Sixteen players on the roster appeared in Somerset at some point during the 2021 season. Returning Patriots include pitchers Sean Boyle, Jhony Brito, Nick Ernst, Carlos Espinal, Michael Gomez, Barrett Loseke, Medina, Vasquez, Waldichuk; catchers Breaux and Mickey Gasper; infielders Jesus Bastidas, Chad Bell, Max Burt; and outfielders Lockridge and Oliver Dunn.
